Stump Grinding

Stump gone, ground ready to seed.

← All Services

A stump left after a tree comes down is a mowing obstacle, a trip hazard and an open invitation to termites and carpenter ants. Greenscapes VA grinds stumps across the Roanoke Valley and leaves the ground ready to plant.

How It Works

The grinder reduces the stump to chips several inches below grade — far enough down that you can backfill with soil and seed or sod straight over it, and the lawn reads as continuous rather than as a patched circle. We handle stumps of any size and will do several in one visit, which is worth batching since most of the cost of a small job is getting the machine there.

  • All stump sizes
  • Ground below grade so the area can be seeded or sodded
  • Chips hauled off or left on site as mulch, your call
  • Area raked out and left ready to plant

Grinding Is Not the Same as Removal

Worth being straight about: grinding takes out the stump and the top of the root flare, not the whole root system. The remaining roots decay in place over several years, which is fine for lawn and for most planting. If you are putting a structure, a driveway or a retaining wall over that exact spot, tell us — full excavation is a different job and you want it done before anything gets built on top.

What the Chips Are Worth

One stump produces a surprising volume of chips. They make serviceable mulch for beds and paths if you want them, though fresh wood chips pull nitrogen from the soil as they break down, so they belong on paths and around established shrubs rather than worked into a vegetable bed. If you do not want them, we take them.

After the Grind

You are left with a depression and a pile of chips. Backfilling with topsoil and seeding is the normal finish — we can do that on the same visit. If the area matters and you want it looking finished immediately, sod over the backfill is the faster answer.

Common Questions About Stump Grinding

Does grinding remove the whole root system?

No. It takes the stump and the top of the root flare, several inches below grade. The remaining roots decay in place over a few years, which is fine for lawn and planting. If you are building on that spot you need full excavation instead — tell us up front.

Can I plant grass over it right away?

Yes, once the hole is backfilled with topsoil. Seeding works in the right season; sod works any time if you want it finished immediately.

What happens to the wood chips?

Your choice — hauled away, or left as mulch. If you keep them, use them on paths or around established shrubs rather than in a vegetable bed, since fresh chips draw nitrogen out of the soil as they break down.

Is it cheaper to do several at once?

Yes, noticeably. Most of the cost of a single small stump is transporting the machine, so several in one visit costs much less per stump than separate trips.
