Fence Installation
Property lines, privacy, and pets — handled.
Greenscapes VA installs fencing for homes, farms and commercial properties throughout the Roanoke Valley. Because we already do the grading, hardscaping and land clearing on these same properties, a fence line that crosses a slope or runs through brush is familiar ground rather than a surprise.
Fencing We Install
- Privacy fencing — board-on-board and stockade panels for back yards and pool enclosures
- Picket fencing — front yards and garden enclosures where you want definition without blocking the view
- Split rail — property lines, driveway edges and rural frontage
- Wire and field fencing — pasture, livestock and larger acreage
- Gates — walk gates and drive gates sized and hung to swing properly years later
Why Terrain Matters Here
Very little of the Roanoke Valley is flat. A fence line running across a grade has to be either stepped or racked, and the choice changes how the finished fence looks and how well it holds a line over time. Clay-heavy soil also means post holes that hold water, so posts need proper depth and drainage at the base or they heave with the first hard freeze.
We walk the line with you before quoting and tell you where the ground is going to force a decision. That conversation is worth having before the first post goes in rather than after.
Before You Build
We will talk through where your property line actually runs, whether a survey is worth pulling, and what your HOA or locality requires on height and setback. Virginia also requires utility locating before digging, which we handle as part of the job — hitting a gas or fiber line is an expensive way to learn where it was.
Clearing and Cleanup Included
If the fence line runs through brush or saplings, we clear it first — that is work we already do with a brush cutter for other clients. When the fence is finished the site is cleaned up, spoil from the post holes is dealt with, and you are not left with a pile of dirt and offcuts.

Common Questions About Fence Installation
Do you handle utility locating before digging?
Yes, as part of the job. Virginia requires utilities be marked before any digging, and post holes count. We schedule the locate and work around the marks.
How do you handle a fence line on a slope?
Either stepped, where each panel stays level and drops at the posts, or racked, where the panel follows the grade. Stepped looks more formal and leaves gaps at the bottom on steep ground; racked follows the land with no gaps. We walk the line and show you which one the grade is pushing toward before quoting.
Can you clear the fence line first?
Yes. Brush and saplings along the line get cleared before the posts go in. That is the same brush-cutting work we do on larger properties, so it is handled in-house rather than subbed out.
Do I need a survey?
Not always, but it is worth knowing where you stand. If the line is close to a neighbor and the corners are not clearly marked, a survey costs far less than moving a finished fence. We will tell you honestly when we think you can skip it.
