Lawn Seeding & New Lawn Installation

A new lawn from bare ground, done in the right season.

Seeding is how you build a lawn from bare ground, or rebuild one that is too far gone to rescue. Greenscapes VA handles seeding across the Roanoke Valley — new construction, areas stripped by a project, and lawns that need starting over rather than patching.

Seeding a New Lawn vs. Overseeding an Existing One

These are different jobs, and the distinction matters when you are deciding what to spend. If you already have a lawn and it is thin, patchy or tired, what you want is aeration and overseeding — core aeration to open compacted soil, then seed into the existing turf. That is the cheaper, faster route and for most established lawns it is the right one.

This page is for the other case: bare dirt, a new build, or turf so far gone that overseeding into it would be throwing seed at a lost cause.

What Proper Seeding Involves

Scattering seed on hard ground mostly feeds birds. Germination depends on seed-to-soil contact, and getting that takes preparation:

  • Soil testing and amendment based on what the ground is actually short of
  • Grading and seedbed prep — a surface loose enough for roots and level enough not to pond
  • Broadcast or slit seeding depending on the area and conditions; a slit seeder cuts the seed into the soil instead of leaving it on top
  • Starter fertilizer matched to a new seeding, not a maintenance feed
  • Straw or erosion control blanket on slopes, so the first heavy rain does not take the seed to the bottom of the hill

Season Decides More Than Technique

Fall is the window for tall fescue in this area, and it is not close. Seed going down in early fall gets warm soil, cooling air and months to root before summer tests it. The same seed in May germinates and then faces heat it has no root system for.

We book up through the fall window, so planning ahead matters. If you come to us in June with bare ground, we will tell you honestly whether to wait for fall, stabilize it in the meantime, or go with sod instead — the one option that does not care what month it is.

Common Questions About Lawn Seeding & New Lawn Installation

When is the best time to seed in Roanoke?

Early fall, and it is not a close call for tall fescue. Seed goes into warm soil with cooling air ahead of it and gets months to root before summer. Spring seeding germinates and then meets heat it has no roots for.

Do I need seeding or overseeding?

If you have an existing lawn that is thin or patchy, you want aeration and overseeding — cheaper and faster. Seeding as described here is for bare ground, new construction, or turf too far gone to rescue.

What is slit seeding?

A slit seeder cuts shallow grooves and drops seed into them, giving direct seed-to-soil contact instead of leaving seed on the surface where it dries out or gets eaten. Germination rates are considerably better than broadcasting on hard ground.

What about seeding on a slope?

Slopes need straw or an erosion control blanket over the seed, otherwise the first real rain carries it to the bottom of the hill. On steep ground sod is sometimes the more economical answer once you count re-seeding the washouts.
