Sod Installation
A finished lawn the day we leave.
Sod is the answer when you need a lawn now rather than in two seasons. Greenscapes VA handles the whole installation — grading, soil preparation, laying and the follow-up that decides whether it takes.
When Sod Beats Seed
Seed is cheaper and, given a good fall window, it works. Sod earns its cost in situations seed handles badly: a new build with bare ground going into summer, a slope where seed washes out before it germinates, a yard that has to look finished for a sale or an event, or a property where erosion is actively moving soil and you cannot wait on germination.
We will tell you when seed would serve you better. Aeration and overseeding on an existing fescue lawn in early fall costs a fraction of sod and usually gets you where you want to go.
What the Installation Involves
- Site prep — clearing the old turf and debris down to workable soil
- Grading — establishing fall away from the foundation and a level surface with no low spots to hold water
- Soil amendment — working in what the ground is short of, which in the Roanoke Valley is usually organic matter in heavy clay
- Laying — tight staggered seams, cut cleanly to beds and walks, rolled so the roots make contact
- Handover — a watering schedule and a straight explanation of what the first three weeks demand
The Part That Decides Whether It Lives
Sod fails for one reason far more often than any other: it does not get enough water in the first two to three weeks. Fresh sod has almost no root system and dries out fast, and a hot week with inconsistent watering will kill it no matter how well it was laid.
We are direct about this before you commit. If nobody is going to be there to water it daily through establishment, we would rather talk you into an irrigation system first, or into seeding in the fall instead, than install a lawn that browns out in three weeks.
Grass for This Climate
Most sod in the Roanoke Valley is tall fescue, which handles our transition-zone climate — cold winters, hot humid summers — better than the alternatives and tolerates the partial shade common on these lots. We will match the variety to how much sun your yard actually gets rather than to what is on the truck.

Common Questions About Sod Installation
How soon can I walk on new sod?
Keep traffic off it for the first two weeks while the roots knit into the soil underneath. After that, light use is fine. Give it a full season before anything heavy.
How much watering does new sod need?
A lot, daily, for the first two to three weeks — that is the single biggest reason sod fails. We give you a specific schedule at handover. If daily watering is not realistic for you, say so before we start and we will talk about irrigation or about seeding instead.
Is sod or seed better for my yard?
Depends on timing and slope. Seed is far cheaper and works well on an existing lawn in early fall. Sod wins when you need it finished now, when a slope would wash seed away, or when bare ground is going into summer. We will tell you which one your situation actually calls for.
What kind of grass will it be?
Usually tall fescue, which handles the Roanoke Valley transition-zone climate and partial shade better than the alternatives. We match the variety to the sun your yard really gets.
