Fire Pit Installation in Roanoke, VA: Built-In vs. Portable, Wood vs. Gas
Of all the hardscaping additions available to a Roanoke homeowner, a fire pit delivers the most usable time per dollar spent. Our shoulder seasons are long — cool evenings run from March into June and again from September through November — and a fire pit is what makes a backyard genuinely comfortable during all of them. But there are real decisions to make about type, fuel, size, and placement, and getting them wrong is how a fire pit ends up unused. Here's how to think it through.
Built-In vs. Portable: What You Actually Gain
A portable steel or cast-iron bowl costs a fraction of a built-in and can be moved or stored, which makes it a reasonable starting point. What you give up is permanence and scale: portable bowls are small, they scorch the grass or patio beneath them, and they never read as part of the landscape. A built-in masonry pit becomes an architectural focal point, holds a much larger fire, and — paired with a paver surround and seat wall — adds real resale value to a Roanoke property. If you already know you'll use it regularly, building it in is the better investment.
Wood-Burning vs. Gas
- Wood-burning — The traditional choice, and what most Roanoke homeowners want. Bigger flame, real crackle and smell, and no fuel line to run. Downsides are smoke, ash cleanout, and wood storage.
- Natural gas — Instant on and off, no smoke, no cleanup. Requires running a gas line from the house, which is the main cost driver and needs to be planned before the pit is built.
- Propane — Same clean-burning convenience as natural gas without a permanent line, but you're managing tank swaps and hiding the tank within the structure.
- Smokeless wood inserts — A middle ground gaining popularity: a double-wall insert that burns wood far more completely, cutting smoke substantially. Worth considering on tighter Roanoke city lots where smoke drifting to a neighbor's deck is a real concern.
Sizing and Seating — The Part People Get Wrong
The most common mistake is building the pit correctly and then not leaving enough room around it. A pit itself is typically 36 to 44 inches in outside diameter, but you need roughly a 7-foot clear radius from the pit's edge to seat people comfortably and let them walk behind the chairs. That means the patio or gravel area around the pit needs to be substantially larger than most homeowners first sketch. Building a fire pit into the middle of an existing small patio usually means the patio becomes unusable for anything else.
Placement, Clearance, and Local Considerations
A fire pit needs at least 10 to 15 feet of clearance from the house, fences, deck structures, and overhanging tree limbs — the last one catches people out on wooded Roanoke and Botetourt County lots, where a mature canopy sits directly above the obvious spot. Check your specific city or county requirements and any HOA rules before building, since open-burning setback rules vary across Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem, and Vinton. Also think about prevailing wind and where smoke will drift, and about the view: a pit that looks out toward the Blue Ridge or over a sloped yard is far more appealing than one facing a fence.
Building It to Last in Our Climate
Like a paver patio, a built-in fire pit lives or dies on its base. It needs a compacted gravel foundation so Roanoke's clay soil doesn't heave it out of level through winter freeze-thaw cycles, and the interior must be lined with firebrick or a steel insert rated for direct heat — standard pavers and block will spall and crack when exposed to fire directly. A drainage provision in the base keeps rainwater from pooling in the bowl and freezing.
