How to Prepare Your Yard for Winter in Roanoke, Virginia
Roanoke winters are unpredictable — temperatures swing between mild and freezing, and ice storms can appear overnight. Preparing your yard in fall is the best investment you can make to ensure a fast, healthy recovery in spring.
1. Final Mowing and Proper Height
Give your lawn a final cut before the first hard frost. For cool-season grasses like tall fescue (the most common in Roanoke), aim for a height of 3 to 3.5 inches going into winter. Too short and the grass is vulnerable to frost damage; too long and it invites disease and matting under snow.
2. Leaf Removal and Cleanup
Leaves left on the lawn through winter create a mat that blocks sunlight, traps moisture, and promotes fungal disease. Remove leaves regularly throughout fall, especially after storms. A layer of mulched leaves is fine — a thick mat is not.
Roanoke's fall foliage is beautiful, but the cleanup is real work. Our team at Greenscapes VA handles full seasonal cleanups across Roanoke, Salem, Vinton, Daleville, and surrounding areas.
3. Fertilize in Late Fall
Apply a slow-release, high-potassium fertilizer in late October or early November. Potassium strengthens grass cell walls, improving cold tolerance. This "winterizer" feeding helps your lawn store energy for a strong spring green-up.
4. Protect Your Irrigation System
Roanoke temperatures regularly dip below freezing in December through February. If you have an in-ground irrigation system, you must winterize it before the first freeze. This means blowing out all water with compressed air to prevent pipes and heads from cracking.
Skipping this step can result in hundreds or thousands of dollars in repairs. Our irrigation team can winterize your system quickly — call us before the first frost.
5. Trim Trees and Shrubs — But Not Too Much
Late fall is a good time to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches from trees and shrubs. However, avoid heavy pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (like azaleas and forsythia) in fall — you'll cut off next year's blooms. Save those for right after they flower in spring.
6. Mulch Your Planting Beds
Apply 2–3 inches of fresh mulch around trees, shrubs, and planting beds before winter. Mulch insulates roots from freeze-thaw cycles, retains moisture, and prevents erosion from winter rain. Keep mulch away from direct contact with plant stems to avoid rot.
7. Store or Cover Outdoor Furniture and Equipment
Drain and store hoses, clean and cover outdoor furniture, and check that your lawn equipment is properly stored for winter. Drain fuel from mowers or add fuel stabilizer to prevent carburetor issues in spring.
